Once again we have a child entering his senior year of high school in our homeschool. I still get a bit stressed over helping them prepare for things such as testing and college so I have been very grateful I had the chance to review the ACT Mom Online Class from ACT Mom.
This self-paced course was created by a homeschooling mom of three whose children who received top scores on their ACT tests and received up to full tuition for college. Her process for preparing her own children was obviously successful and so others began asking her to teach a prep class to their children. This grew into a 13-week course which included instruction and practice tests.
During the lockdown season we all experienced in 2020, she was able to convert her entire course to a streaming platform so students could watch and work through the lessons at home on their own schedule. This not only helped the students who would have been attending her classes in person, but it’s allowed her to reach out to students everywhere!
In each module, the student watches a video lesson (streamed through your internet connection,) works practice problems and then hears/sees the answers with explanation. Video lessons and practice problems are designed to prepare students for the specific type of problems they’ll encounter to taking the actual ACT exam. This is one instance when “teaching to the test” receives my approval. For us, the goal is to improve test scores in order to increase the possibility of receiving scholarships to help pay for college expenses.
This course contains four modules:
- English
- Mathematics
- Reading
- Science
Our son will be taking the ACT exam this winter and so is working through several lessons each week in order to be as prepared as possible. It will take him about 8 weeks to finish all four modules. If your child is not yet a senior, you could work at a slower pace – I do wish we had not put this off until his senior year!
Registering for the ACT Mom Online Class was easy. I simply clicked on the ‘CLASSES’ tab on the top menu bar, and chose ‘Online Classes.’ I filled out my contact and payment information and was a little surprised they wanted my mailing address. The wonderful thing is with our membership we received a binder in the mail that contained actual practice tests for each of the four modules.
The pages are slipped into plastic page protectors and a dry erase marker was included so we can use and reuse as many times as we like. Brilliant! Just the sort of thing an experienced homeschool mom would think of, right? She even included a pouch to store the marker as well as the cleaning cloth and post-it tabs that were also included.
Once we were registered and received our log in information, Noah was ready to get started. Our routine is pretty straight forward – 3 times a week he logs in, selects the module he is currently working on, watches the video lesson, taking notes and working practice problems along with the instructor, then takes a quiz. If he does not feel confident with the material from that lesson he can go back and re-watch as many times as he needs to.
I recommend taking the practice test for Module 1 after completing the lessons for Module 1. Then do the same for Modules 2, 3 and 4. I will then have Noah review whatever he wishes and then have him take the entire practice exam in one sitting.
I was happy to see a scoring sheet included at the back of the binder. I can tabulate a score for each test and I see immediately what score he would officially receive if this had been an official test.
Our 17 year old son and I both agree this is has been an excellent addition to our high school plan. He likes the straight-forward presentation that gives him tools to accomplish his goals and improve his results. We have both been pleased that with only a few hours per week contributes to great reward. He is feeling much more confident about the upcoming exam.
