My daughter has been enjoying using an online math program from Smartick. I was happy to receive a 6 month online subscription as a member of the Homeschool Review Crew. Smartick is a program that strengthens math skills, reading comprehension, logic and reasoning all wrapped together!
It is designed for students ages 4 to 14. These are the foundational years, laying the groundwork and concepts for all of life. Smartick helps you and your student reinforce the skills they have learned, setting them up for success.
It is quick and easy to set up the student accounts, and from the dashboard each person using the program can create their own avatar and get started exploring. During her first session, my daughter finished a placement exercise and the program automatically set itself up just for her.
Students are expected to work for 15 minutes per day, 4-5 times per week. This is an easy goal to accomplish, and students find it fun as well as educational. Behind the scenes, the people at Smartick are continually analyzing your child’s session, in real time, as they work. They adapt the problems and activities give to their math needs and their learning pace. It’s customized and uniquely personal!
During each session, your child will earn “ticks” by answering the math questions presented. They will see a math problem one at a time at the level appropriate for them, based on their performance so far. They receive immediate feedback with a ding of a bell or a red x while showing the correct answer. This way students get valuable practice in math skills, self-correcting as they go, and improving their speed too.
Once they have earned enough ‘ticks’ the child is rewarded with ‘shopping’ and games and activities after their session is over. That’s the fun part! They can furnish their treehouse, buy a pet, collect rewards, all sorts of fun things. Paying attention and answering correctly allows them to build up their ‘ticks’ more quickly. The games are fun, but they also help in building their memory and reasoning skills as well.
Parents and students alike can view progress from the dashboard. The parent/teacher can set the calendar for the days you expect to have them working and days they will have off. So easy and convenient! As long as you have a device to sign onto internet access, you can use this anywhere – at home, while traveling, in the waiting room.
You can use this with multiple children, at different levels because they each get their own sign-in identity and the program customizes to each individual’s session. We have found Smartick easy to set up and use. The online math practice is effective at sharpening math skills. I do not have to remind my daughter to use it, she often pulls out my laptop and gets started all on her own. In fact, I sometimes have to remind her it supposed to ONLY be a 15 minute session!
