I have never been happier to have a good supply of my favorite Mary Jane Slippers than I have this winter. We have had some cold cold weather and keeping my tootsies warm goes a long way in keeping my whole body warm. Once Autumn weather brings us a break from the summer heat my hands get busy with knitting and crocheting projects – like warm and cozy slippers.
I use this pattern to crochet a few pair each year. It uses basic stitches so this pattern even beginners can follow. They don’t take long, I can whip up a pair while watching a football game on Sunday afternoon with hubbie or a movie on Friday night with the family.
Mary Jane Style Slippers
You will need: yarn, crochet hook, 2 buttons, needle & thread for attaching buttons.
[This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn and size L hook. I prefer a lighter weight, softer yarn and smaller hook, which changes the gauge of my stitches. I adapt the pattern as I go, increasing the number of stitches as needed. This pattern is very forgiving – change it up and try different combinations until you find a shape and gauge that suits your fancy. You can use this same pattern for adult or child size]
- Using 2 strands of yarn – ch 2. 6 hdc in first ch. Join. (you could begin with a Magic Circle)
- ch 2. 2 hdc in each stitch around. Join.
- ch 2. 1 hdc in next st. 2 hdc in next st. Repeat around. Join.
- ch 2. 1 hdc in each st around. Join. The creates the toe box. Repeat until toe box is the length you want.
- ch 2. hdc in next 14 sts. Turn and continue this till foot area is length you want. You want the slipper to fit snug, so when you get to the heel, put right sides together and slip stitch shut.
- Edge the slipper with a row of slip stitches for a nice finished edge and to help the slipper hold it’s shape.
- You can add a strap by starting on one side, attaching yarn with a slip stitch, chain 2, and making it 2-4 sc wide (depending on your preference) then slip stitching it to the opposite side. Crochet back and forth making a strip long enough to pull over top of foot plus a bit extra for buttoning.
- Choose 2 buttons (without a shank) and sew 1 onto the outside of each slipper. There will be space between stitches at the end of each strap for buttoning – no need to make button holes!
- TA-DA! pretty little slippers to warm your toes.

These are DARLING! I’ve always loved the “girlie” way this style looks and I don’t think we ever outgrow them. Wish I knew how to knit or crochet. Since I don’t, I’ll have to stick with wearing two pairs of socks like I have all winter long!
Linda says
thank you, Joyce, for your sweet comment! Keep those feet warm how ever you can, and hang on, Spring and warmer weather are coming! Have a wonderful and blessed day, I’m so glad you stopped by for a visit today 🙂
