There is always room for improvement when it comes to writing skills. That’s why I was happy to get the opportunity to have my high school son use Building Writing Skills – Essential Tips & Techniques from The Critical Thinking Co.
No matter what path our children might be on, no matter what career or occupation they may choose, they will have to express themselves in writing somewhere, somehow. They may never write a novel, but they may have to write an essay for their college entrance exam. They may never write articles for a national newspaper or magazine, but they just might decide to send a family newsletter or maybe even write blog articles.
This 70 page workbook is the perfect supplement to any language arts program for students in grades 6 through 12. Designed to be used once or twice per week, the workbook pages ask students to fine-tune their skills in the essentials of good writing and expression.
The one-page lessons are clear and easy to use. Depending on the student, they can be worked with only a little instruction or guidance from the parent/teacher. The activities used to strengthen your student’s writing skills range from fill-in-the blank to matching to re-writing exercises, and even a crossword puzzle now and then.
The book is divided into 30 different sections that guide students through activities that encourage creative word usage and sentence structure. Using tools such as a thesaurus, they are challenged to make their writing more clear, more concise, more interesting. Some of the areas addressed are:
- Vivid Verbs, Strong Adjectives, Specific Nouns
- Show, Not Tell
- Alliteration, Similes, Metaphores, Hyperbole
- Appositives, Repetition
- Transition Words and Phrases
Building Writing Skills is available as a physical workbook and as a digital download. For the purposes of this review I was given a copy of both. Our personal preference would be the physical book, with it’s consumable, tear-away pages. There’s great value in putting our writing directly to the page with an old-fashioned pencil.
But the digital version is really great, too! You can print the workbook pages out and bind them in a folder or notebook, creating your own workbook. Or you can have student type in their answers directly on the computer. You can see in the screenshot above how my son typed letters into the blanks on a page of alliteration exercises. For those who have limited space or do their schooling while traveling, the digital version would be an excellent option.
