My daughter needed some help mastering some of her math facts, so I was very happy for the opportunity to try Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication with a Bridge to Division from Math-U-See. A refresher course in multiplication facts was just the thing we needed.
If you are familiar with Math-U-See, you already know their program is a multi-sensory-based curriculum that uses colored block sets as manipulatives in their written and oral lessons. Students advance through the levels in a logical sequence, building new skills on concepts already mastered.
The AIM program uses the same style of teaching, but focuses only on one specific math skill – in this case, multiplication. The goal at each step is mastery, with a long-term goal of preparing for division.
I was pleased to see our kit contained everything we needed:
● Integer Blocks
● Resource Guide
● Math Fact Strategy Posters
● Fact Check Cards
● Digital Pack (access to online lessons/videos, instructions, solutions, and
downloadable/printable resources)
This self-paced program is designed to be a supplement to your core math curriculum. It is assumed students are already familiar with basic math concepts and principles like addition, subtraction, multiplication. There are only ten lessons, but the student determines the pace by how quickly they master each lesson. A 15-minute session each day helps your child get consistent practice without overwhelming them.
In each of the lessons you’ll find four sections A, B, C and D. A and B use the Build, Write, Say Method in which your student will use the manipulatives to demonstrate multiplication facts. In C you phase out the manipulatives and move to D to check for mastery.
The lessons include:
- The Integer Blocks
- Rectangles, Factors, and Product
- Doubles and The Commutative Property of Multiplication
- Tens Facts: Increase Place Value by One Place
- Fives Facts: Use the tens fact, Find Half the Product
- Nines Facts: Use the Tens Fact, Subtract One Group
- Multiplication by 4: Doubles, Doubles
- Multiplication by 6: Use the Fives Fact, Add One More Group
- Extras, Facts Known, and The Distributive Property
- Evaluation and Assessment
- Bridge To Division
The resource guide gives you a road map for each lesson, guiding teacher and student through the materials and videos, with teaching tips for each lesson. I found it to be self-explanatory and we easily jumped into the lessons after skimming through the material. The videos are short, clear and easy to follow – a good model for how lessons should proceed.
In our case, my 9th grade daughter moved quickly through the first couple of lessons. She then tried to move more quickly, not paying as close attention to the …….. and was not as quick to recall her facts. So we slowed down and spent more time with the recommended activities. It worked wonders and her speed and accuracy improved immensely.
It is important to note The Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication program is an teacher/parent-guided program designed for students 10 years of age and older who are struggling with mastery of multiplication facts. You play a key role. We did not find this program to be time-consuming, though. Working together helped my daughter and myself get a better idea of where she was at and where we needed to go with things.
We found Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication with a Bridge to Division easy to use and effective as a supplement to our current math curriculum. Investing a few minutes a day to solidify skills that are the building blocks for higher level math courses was well worth our time!
