As a young wife, the idea of being my husbands helpmeet was sometimes overwhelming and confusing. Then as a new mother, there were many moments I was sure I was not up to the task. One of things I valued most was my friendships with Godly women who were committed to their marriages and working at being the best moms they could be, with the scriptures as their standard. It is such an encouragement to be able to learn from someone who’s just a bit ahead of me on this journey of mine. I think that is what Paul had in mind when he encouraged the older women to teach the younger women (Titus 2:3-5).
When I first sat down to read, I expected to open up to a list of things to do in order to become a better wife and on how to make my husband a happy man. Rather than a how-to book full of formulas, these ladies offer up encouragement and scripture and testimony to support women in their roles as Help Meets to their husbands, and as mothers, and in our walk with Christ as well.
You’ll find sections on Finding Time for God and Loving Our Husbands and Raising Our Children for Christ. You will find refreshing words in the sections on Homemaking and Ministering Outside the Home. They even touch on the subject of Finances. All these areas come under the jurisidiction of being a Help Meet to our husbands and this book does a beautiful job of sharing practical tips and ideas from many different perspectives.
This book is written from the writers own lives, full of personal testimony and experience. I especially appreciated a very personal prayer Bridget included on page 21, thanking God for her husband and children, asking Him to bless them and to strengthen their marriage and build relationship. Ren did a fantastic job with a section on being a pleasure to your husband and the importance of that in the physical relationship between husband and wife.
We can all use a little encouragement in our daily walk as wives, mothers and help meets. Whether you are a new bride or have celebrated your golden wedding anniversary, we all need to be reminded that building a stronger marriage involves honor, respect and love. This book does just that. The authors really do share their hearts.
