Do you have a homemaking motto? Is there a saying you find yourself repeating to motivate your family to work hard and enjoy life? How do you teach them to be content? The sampler displaying the little poem ‘Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without was a wedding gift stitched by a sweet family friend and has been hanging in our home for the past 30 years. It’s been our motto all these years. It has helped set the tone and has been spoken out loud more times than I can count. It helps remind us to have an attitude of gratitude, to be resourceful and creative, to be content.
Merriam-Webster says contentment is the state of being happy and satisfied.
Are you happy and satisfied? Maybe adopting our motto will help. These words by Paul might also help you find contentment:
- “And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” (1 Timothy 6:8)
- “. . . for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content . . . ” (Philippians 4:11)
- “. . . be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” (Hebrews 13:5)
Use it up,
Wear it out,
Make it do,
Do without.
And now it’s time for this week’s Hearts for Home Blog Hop!
We have a three-way tie for the most viewed post from last week’s blog hop! It seems many of us still are thinking about schooling even though summer has begun – moms like Jacqueline at Fruitful Families who listed out 4 benefits to homeschooling year round and Kayla at The Arrowood Zoo who tells us 5 reasons she loves their Mystery of History curriculum. And there is also much discussion out there about simplifying our online lives – Misty at Finding Joy in the Journey shares how she whittled down her friends list on facebook and lived to tell about it.

I have a framed Mary Engelbreit poster in my laundry room, that speaks to contentment, with a happy young woman vacuuming and dusting, and the words “Don’t do whatever you like, like whatever you do.”
Of course, I also like to repeat Dory’s word’s from Finding Nemo – “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…” 🙂
Linda says
love Mary Engelbreit! and that saying, too. It is something we should definitely be training into our children. I am so glad you stopped by to share with us today – Blessings!
