One of my goal in raising our children – sons and daughters alike – is for them to be able to fix at least three different meals and to know about cooking basics and meal planning before they leave home. As a new bride I thought I knew everything I needed to know about providing delicious and wholesome meals for my hard-working husband. I was shocked when my first attempts did not turn out like the photos in my cookbook! I had been watching my mother in the kitchen for 20 years but I couldn’t seem to get everything together and on the table at the same time. It was a more complicated task that I envisioned! What I needed then was a plan for simplified dinners. Oh how I wish my friend Mystie had been around with her ebook {my affiliate link} Simplified Dinners for New Cooks.
Simplified Dinners for New Cooks provides the perfect outline for the person wanting to learn the basic of cooking. There is a chapter on HOW to put together a meal and a chapter on teaching kids to cook. There are helpful lists of kitchen tools and skills with definitions included. Mystie walks you through all the basics. As a part of our homeschool these next couple of months my children and I will be going through the chapters and the recipes, learning side-by-side and creating fantastic meals while we are at it!

Apparently Bradford took over the cooking while I was gone this past weekend! Scott and I are both very pleased for the initiative and the yummy food he made.
Isn’t wonderful to have men that cook? I love having my guys helping in the kitchen. Tell Bradford we’ll be happy to let him prepare lunch next we stop in 😉
I am always looking for fun new ways to encourage my children in cooking:)
Children love helping in the kitchen 🙂 this book makes it easy!
This would be great for my oldest. She already says she wants to be a baker – so helping her develop any cooking skills would be great for her, plus a confidence booster! My go to meal when having people over is Amish creamed chicken over egg noodles. Easy to stretch portions (in case a few extra people show up), definite comfort food and doesn’t take too long to prep or require me to really be on top of things in case door bell rings, etc.
This book sounds perfect for your daughter, Amanda! Amish creamed chicken – sounds delicious!! I love dishes that are easy to stretch. So often we are not sure of the number that will be at the table or what sized appetites they may bring with them 😉 Maybe I should have required commenters to share their recipes too!
My four oldest can all cook and/or bake enough to feed their siblings something if I’m not up to it. My fifth is starting to learn. It has been such a tremendous help and blessing to me to have my children be able to make their way around the kitchen with ease.
How wonderful that you have such good helpers – you’re doing a great job raising your family, Jennifer. I do enjoy watching my children work in the kitchen, they always have a good time.
My kids really want to learn to cook, but I’m not sure where to start. This sounds great!
This book has lots of helpful tips and ideas for teaching your children how to cook Noelle! I think having them assist you as you prepare meals is a great place to start. They learn how to use kitchen tools and how to assemble ingredients that way. Don’t be intimidated, just include them a little each day. Ask them what they want to learn and start there!
Oooh this looks great! My kids would love it!
We’ve been having fun with it, Becca 🙂 so glad you stopped by to have a look!
My families go to meal for guests is French Dip sandwiches! YUM!
French Dip Sandwiches sound delicious, Boni, and the perfect impress-your-guests meal! I’m going to have to add this to my next monthly menu. So glad you stopped by for a visit 🙂
Somehow I always pick hard and new thing for company. Establishing a go to recipe 10 years ago would have been brilliant! Would love that book for taking my kids! Thanks!
I’ve done the same. For some reason I think I must impress, when really all I want to do is make my guest happy and welcome. Simple comfort food is often a better choice. I think you’ll enjoy this ebook. It’s full of good ideas and helpful tips.
My oldest of our four children is nine years old. For Christmas, he received his own omelette skillet and has almost mastered the art (still needs a little guidance from Dad, the omelette master). I am not good at letting my kids cook dinner with me in the kitchen. I always feel rushed, tired, and a little on edge anyway about that time of day. I just want them to go have some free time and let me zone out while I cook. The Littles’ idea of helping is trying to sneak bites – even of raw meat & egg.
Yet, I don’t want to repeat my mom’s mistake. Whenever I asked to help with dinner, she always had me make a salad. I became an expert salad maker, making a huge salad for a family of eight four or five nights a week. However, by the time I left for college, I had no idea how to make the rest of the meal, let alone time it all to finish together. I want my kids to be able to plan, purchase, & make an entire week of meals all by themselves before they leave home. How do I reach that goal?
Any wonder that my go-to meal for company coming is grilled turkey on a bed of salad greens, topped with strawberry slices, pecans, and poppyseed dressing and accompanied with fresh baked bread?
Cabot Mama, your go-to meal for company sounds delicious!
How exciting that your son is following in his father’s footsteps, mastering the art of the omelet. That is one of the things my boys all have learned to make before leaving home.
I can relate to just wanting some peace and quiet as I get meals ready. I often have to concsiously make the effort to include them. My advice is to plan a day each week that you can give a little more time to meal prep and rotate helpers. Let them use child-sized scissors to cut things like peppers and olives, even bacon and hard boiled eggs. Teach them how to stir a pot of hot soup or sauce. Just a little at a time, it adds up over the years. Makes great memories and lays a foundation.
Mystie’s ebook is one that even a 9 or 10 year old could read through and understand. You might be amazed at the ideas they come up with on their own!
