What do the walls of our homes say about us? What message do they give to our guests? The walls of our homes tell those who enter and those who live between them much about who we are and what we are about. Taking a little time and effort to personalize them will make those impersonal sheets of drywall come to life and make our houses into homes.
Scripture tells us “these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
What can we do to bring scripture alive and bring out our family’s personality? One way is to add family photos. Our family sees daily our Family Gallery Wall. It’s needing updating again with new grandchildren being added!
Maybe you have a family motto or verse. Print it or paint it or spell it out. This Sampler spelling out a favorite saying of mine and has hung prominently in my kitchen area in every home we’ve made these last 3 decades.
Maybe you’d like to spell out your family name, or give your guests a big Front Door WELCOME! Oh, I have just the thing for you! You might want to spark creativity as you are heading back into the school year. Spell inspirational words, get the alphabet, bring art and the outdoors into your children’s learning experience!!
Decorate your school room or dining room by spelling out your own message using letters photographed in unexpected places.
These photo letters are from photographs my daughter took. They make me smile every time I see them.
How do you personalize your walls? What would you spell using photo letters?

I really like your Family Gallery Wall! We have a less stylish one- just a whole lot of photo frames up together- but I also keep a frame on our kitchen table for a Scripture verse or saying, which I change every few weeks.
Thank you Gwen 😀 our little Family Gallery Wall has only been up a while – for many years it was a mish-mash of random frames and photos. I love hearing how you switch out the verse in your kitchen every few weeks. That makes it fresh a meaningful. I’m so glad you came by today, thank you for your sweet comment. Blessings!
I use lots of family pictures in my decorating, and I have one room that is decorated in Norman Rockwell because 1) I love his painting and 2) it’s a nod to my American heritage (I’m an American living in Canada).
Your home sounds very welcoming, Jennifer 🙂 I love Norman Rockwell paintings too, and I didn’t know you were American!
Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit today. Blessings!
I love this article! Thank you for sharing it with us at Hip Homeschool Moms on our Hip Homeschool Hop! I’ve been considering doing something like this at my house, but I haven’t ever taken the time to actually plan it out and do it, so this article was very timely for me!
I’m so glad this post was helpful, Wendy 🙂 I hope you find a way to get something on your walls to reflect your family’s personality and bless those who enter your home — and remember, it’s all temporary! You can change it out as you see fit. Our walls have not always looked this way. We change and grow, and so do our homes. Have a blessed weekend!
