“There’s a war going on for the souls of men, and for the souls of young men in particular.”
This quote from Hal and Melanie Young sets the stage for this short but powerful book. Unlike other resources I’ve seen for teaching our young people about sexuality, this book is specifically written to parents of boys. The authors make it clear from the beginning that sex is God’s idea and that we parents should be equipping our children with ‘marriage education’ rather than ‘sex education.’
Through the ages, Satan has perverted God’s design along with our views and definitions of marriage, sexuality. Love, Honor, and Virtue takes you directly the the Biblical model for these relationships and behaviors. They go straight to The Source and let scripture guide you in how you discuss this sensitive topic with your teen aged boys.
You’ll find six short chapters, along with the introduction and conclusion, on the topics such as:
- the difference between boys and girls
- pornography, perversion and sin
- keeping your way pure and accountability
- recovering from a fall
- wisdom in guy/girl relationships
Each chapter is written directly to young men as they prepare to step into the battle that wages around them – they need to know ahead of time how to live in a world that says “If it feels good, do it. Truth is relative. Go for the gusto!”
At the end of each chapter there is a bullet-point list of the important topics addressed in that chapter. This list makes an excellent outline for discussion. Each family should choose when their son is ready to read and address these delicate topics, but my personal opinion is many of us either force it too early or wait until it’s too late.
Also discussed are the issues that technology has brought into our lives. How are they to be disciplined and accountable with television, smart phones, internet, video games, etc? These are conversations we must have with our boys, at the present as well as in the years to come.
And then there’s dating and choosing a mate. How? When? Who? These things are discussed as the book comes to a close. Hal and Melanie Young speak truth in a straight forward manner, with tact and sensitivity, without beating around the bush.

Hal and Melanie Young have also written No Longer Little: Parenting Tweens with Grace and Hope. This fantastic resource is brand new and written for parents who are in the midst of raising tweens and preteens. I read and reviewed No Longer Little here. Both of these books now have a place in our family library.
Many of my fellow Crew Mates are reviewing these books as well. You can see their opinions by clicking the image below:
