A science course with lab included is required for my son Noah to graduate from high school so I am happy we have been able to use the online science lab for chemistry from Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science. High School Chemistry Lab at home? Yes! It’s virtual, interactive, self-paced and fun!
Once we were registered and signed in, Noah and I were able to access the course. From the dashboard we found links to an introductions and ten different labs.
- The Introduction familiarized us with the Virtual Lab, the Scientific Method, and Lab Reports
- Lab #1: Measurement in Science
- Lab #2: pH Determination
- Lab #3: Elements, Moles & Molar Mass
- Lab #4: Viscosity
- Lab #5: Density Determination
- Lab #6: Diffusion and Osmosis
- Lab #7: Quantifying Surface Area
- Lab #8: Colligative Properties & Freezing Point Depression
- Lab #9: Determination of Molarity
- Lab #10: Determination of Relative Atomic Mass & Number of Neutrons
With each lesson there is a video from the instructor with details about the upcoming lab. Sometimes external links are given for further information (just a heads up – I have not found this to be a problem.) And then the student enters their science lab. The graphics of the ‘animated’ lab are clear, accurate and easy to navigate. You even get the turn the lights on when you enter!
For each lab, Step by Step instructions are given in the sidebar and the student uses their mouse and keyboard to walk through each activity. They may pull a beaker from the cabinet, fill it with a certain amount of water, set it on the burner to heat, register the temperature.
If your student is not taking chemistry, you’ll be happy to know there are lab courses for Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Physics as well. For younger students, you’ll find lab courses appropriate for their age level. A great fit for all learning styles and for use with a variety of ages, I recommend the Virtual Labs and Online Classes from Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science to supplement your science curriculum.
