They say that long, long ago, in a land far away, when the common people complained they had no bread to eat, Marie Antoinette declared, “Let them eat cake!” Or so I’ve been told.
Did you know, in real life, today is National Cake Decorating Day? Neither did I. Until the day was half over. Which reminded me that I’ve been wanting to tell you about this awesome group of children who really and truly had a desire to learn how to decorate cakes.
As part of our homeschool co-op session this fall I taught a group of 15 children ages 5 to 14 some basic cake decorating techniques. To be more precise, they brought their tools and supplies, I demonstrated just a bit and they took off running and put their talents and creativity to work. It didn’t take long for them to learn how to bring glorious designs to life through buttercream and fondant.
Do you want in on a little secret? In real life I sometimes eat cake (or cookies or pie) for breakfast, just like Marie Antoinette. Why not? a little flour, egg, milk, butter – sounds like breakfast to me! With a cup of hot coffee it’s not a bad way to start the day, once in a while. To be totally honest, although I do enjoy the art of decorating cakes, I can do without the icing. Unlike some young people I know. Needless to say, we never had too much icing on hand during the class – the students made sure it didn’t go to waste!
How Sweet It Is!
